6 Life Experiences that Helped Shape Who You Are Today

Has somebody ever asked you: what are the most important experiences that have shaped your life? Perhaps the topic came up during a job interview, a date, or when you were talking to one of your good friends.

Well, what would your answer be?

Most of us would find ourselves scrambling through a bunch of events that happened in our life. We’d soon realize that there are so many things that have changed us, even the littlest things that we never thought of.

Regardless of who you are, your life experiences have played a massive role in shaping your personality, thoughts, feelings, and therefore your actions.

When we think of things that made you the person that you are today, we can put things into categories that help us tell these stories:

#1. Family

Imagine the impact your parents, siblings, and extended family has had on you. They formed the core of your early existence. As we grow up, we tend to start distancing ourselves to become independent, but at the end of the day, we know that we are here because of them. Most of us are grateful to our parents for bringing us into this world and walking with us every step of the way, even during rough times. You are the person that you are today because they were your early role models.

#2. Friends

Friendships are a beautiful thing. Think about those special persons who walked into your life at one point or another. Whether they were different or similar to you, they have most likely shown you a different perspective of life and taught you about yourself and the world at large. We all have stories of friends who have shaped our lives for the good or bad. Do you remember the last time you met someone so similar to you that you wondered where they had been all your life? That's just the great thing about friendships - they can be exciting and life-changing.

#3. Education and Career

As we decided on our education and career, most of us have run into bumpy roads. It would be nice if we could just do the things that we wanted to do without struggling. But that's where passion comes in. Passion is what drives us to continue. We find obstacles in front of us that stop us from pursuing what we want to do. These "falls" have been and continue to be experiences that shape us to be who we are. And, our accomplishments are great, but it is the failures that shape us even more. Without them, we would not know what accomplishments are!

#4. Relationships

Love is a fascinating, but also a delicate thing. Some relationships fail immediately, while some start to fall apart slowly, and of course some last for a long time. They are all amazing because each relationship you have had shaped you to be the person you are today. Maybe it shaped your personality, or maybe it shaped your next relationship. Maybe it taught you how you are with another person or how to love properly. And just maybe, this is why you are the person you are now.

#5. Deaths

Life is an amazing thing, so when we lose someone or see deaths happen around us, it shakes us up. Whenever someone passes, we tell each other, "Cherish the ones you love and care about. Show them what they mean to you before it's too late." Deaths are constant reminders that nothing is forever, but you can make up for that by how you use your days. Maybe there are deaths that push you and motivate you to fight even harder for what you want. Regardless of your experience with death, it puts you on the edge of life.

#6. Opportunities

We can strive for the best in the things that we want to do, but if you do not take the opportunities to do so, even if you tried - it would not happen. We are given countless opportunities during the course of our life. The chances that we take and turn down is what shapes us to be the person that we are. We will always think back to the things that we had the chance to do and try, but at the same time, we will also think back to the "What if's" in our lives. It is this that keeps us going and directs us to continue our personal development.

Final Thoughts

So, the next time someone asks you what shaped you to be the person that you are today, a good way to describe this is: life. In reality, everything changes us even when we don’t realize it. And that's another thing about life. It's always changing. You are always changing.
