How to Answer the Journal Prompt, “What Makes You Unique?”

Deeply ingrained in human nature is the overwhelming desire to be unique, and to express that individuality to others. This innate urge manifests itself in the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the careers we choose, and just about every other facet of our lives.

Yet, despite this, we find that people often have trouble expressing exactly what makes them unique, especially in situations such as job interviews or journaling where they need to put it into words.

This article is dedicated to helping you understand what exactly makes you a unique person, as well as giving you some of the best tips on how to translate that feeling of uniqueness into a soliloquy of words.

Here’s how you can answer the journal prompt, “What Makes You Unique?”

Understand What Defines Uniqueness

According to Webster, to be unique is defined as being “without a like or equal.” In this sense, every person on earth is unique because none of us have exactly the same personalities, stories, or lives. Just because you are different from everyone else, however, does not mean that it’s easy to pinpoint exactly what makes you that way.

In terms of a person being unique, there is a single major area that we can be sure is unlike anything else in existence: our minds.

The way that you think is what characterizes you as an individual, and is where you should concentrate when looking to find out what sets you apart from the crowd.

Start by Doing Some Soul-Searching

Answering the question of your individuality is not a simple task, so don’t get discouraged if it takes you a while to make a significant breakthrough. This is doubly true if you are not someone who regularly self-reflects or practices mindfulness. After all, just like in the way we get to know others, it takes some time to truly get to know yourself.

To set yourself on the right path, we recommend beginning by making a bulleted list of the traits you have that you are most proud of. For some, this could be your intelligence, your loyalty, or your care for others. No matter what it is, though, your perspective on your favorite traits is something that no one else has.

Next, we also suggest asking yourself some probing questions to get your thoughts flowing. Here are some you may consider using in this exercise:

  • How do I view the importance of family and friends?
  • Which of my personal values is most important to me, and why?
  • If I could do anything without fear of consequence, I would _____.
  • What accomplishment am I most proud of?
  • Which of my memories do I consider to be the happiest?
  • What do I consider to be the best day of my life?
  • When I am stressed, what are the thoughts that go through my mind?

These are just a few to get you started, but they should serve to help get your gears turning.

What’s even more important than these questions, though, is why you answer them the way you do. For example, if you answered the second question as “loyalty is most important to me,” then take a moment to consider and truly understand why you hold that trait to be above all others. This will give you some valuable insight into why you think the way you do.

Once You Have a Baseline, Look at Some Examples (Optional)

Now, at this point, you’ve probably got some ideas floating around your head regarding what you’re going to write about. But just because you have the ideas doesn’t mean you know how to translate them onto paper.

If you’re struggling in this area, we recommend looking at some examples that other people have written in response to this prompt. This will give you a good idea of how to start your own story. And you know what they say: “Nothing is more difficult than taking the first step.”

Final Thoughts

Although it can be difficult to look inside yourself to find the answers you need, it isn’t impossible. Rather, it merely takes a little practice and persistence in order to coax that thoughtful inner voice out into the open.

Moreover, if you’re someone who enjoys journaling, you may find significant benefit in using our specialized LIFEazine software to bring your story to life. Using this software, you can combine thoughts and photos onto a single page and show the world what you’re made of.

We’d love to see what you can create!
