How to Stay Calm and Destress During the Holiday Season
Holidays are amazing.
They’re the one time of the year when we can get together with friends and family members we haven’t seen in a while and really appreciate some well-earned time off from our day jobs. Not to mention the love, laughs, and incredible food that comes with them!
Despite all of this, however, the holidays are often stressful as well. Especially during the Christmas season, most of us want our decorations, presents and food to be perfect.
No matter how hard you try to get away from your worries for a little while, they always seem to sneak up on you when you’re least expecting it (and that’s not even to mention the emotional toll caused by finding those perfect gifts and spending all that holiday cash!)
This blog post is all about that holiday stress: what it is, where it comes from, and how you can beat it and appreciate the holidays with the people you love.
How Can I Beat Holiday Stress?
Holiday stress comes in many different forms, so it’s difficult to give advice on how exactly you can beat it when your stress is likely very different from everyone else’s. That said, there are some ways to cope with it that work well across the board.
Let’s have a look:
Write Down Your Worries
In my experience, one of the best ways to get away from those nagging thoughts in the back of your head is to write them down.
When you write down worries or concerns, your brain is able to let them go because it recognizes that it no longer has to remember them. This leads to you being able to relax more throughout the holiday season and gives you a way to come back to those thoughts later if they’re really important.
Stay in the Moment
Another great way to banish the holiday blues is to work on staying in the moment. Any time you feel yourself slipping back into those negative thoughts, simply pull yourself back into the present and focus on your surroundings. Run through 5 things you can feel, see, and hear to ground yourself to the present. Additionally, you can try starting a conversation with someone to get your mind off of it.
And who knows—later, you might find that those conversations and moments you created are excellent stories for putting in your LIFEazine!
Ask for Help
When all else fails, don’t be afraid to recruit someone to help keep you in line. Your friends and family members love you just as much as you love them, which means that most of them will be more than willing to help keep you in check!
Simply ask one of them to help steer you in the right direction if they notice you taking a negative turn, either by prompting you to think of something positive, bringing your attention to what you’re doing, or even by starting a Christmas game!
When we get stuck in our heads, it can often be difficult to recognize on our own when we’re falling into those same negative thinking patterns. Because of this, having someone there to help you is absolutely invaluable.
The holidays are meant to be joyous, so don’t let a little stress get in the way of spending time with the people you love.
Instead, focus on the good things around you and think about how lucky you are to be where you are. Whether you need to write things down, keep yourself present, or ask for help, there are always ways to make sure you have a great time.
